Fresh M.I.L.K Competition

30 May, 2009

Inspired by the 1950's landmark photographic exhibition, "The Family of Man", M.I.L.K. began as an epic global search to find unique and geographically diverse images on the themes of friendship, family and love. It was not only the richest in photographic history, but also one of the most significant, drawing participation from 17,000 professional and amateur photographers in 164 countries. In total over 40,000 images were received by M.I.L.K., including at least four Pulitzer Prize-winners. The 300 winning images were chosen by the Chief Judge Magnum photographer Elliott Erwitt, and were the basis for three books entitled Family, Friendship and Love and an international touring exhibition launched at New York's Grand Central Terminal in 2001.

Fresh M.I.L.K was a US $125,000 online competition that challenged photographers to capture spontaneous and emotive moments shared between friends, families and lovers around the world. After receiving nearly 35,000 entries from photographers in 112 countries, a judging panel has selected 150 general winners, and eminent Magnum photographer and Chief Judge Elliott Erwitt has selected the Grand Prize-winner.
The 150 winning images are to be published in a new book entitled Friendship, Family, Love & Laughter in November 2009, and on selected licensed products.

Shot at a wedding,  PADRE E FIGLIO  ( Italian for father and son ) was Graham Monro's photo selected for the prize." PADRE E FIGLIO " ( Italian for father and son )
father of the groom sydney

What is the story behind the photo?
After a commercial photography career of advertising, editorial and design I switched to the domestic market of weddings and portraits. I was commisioned to shoot this wedding by Vince Lagana, a handsome young advertising art director when he married the gorgeous graphic designer Angela Manconi of Cammeray.
Vince had met me years before when I was invited to lecture at the advertising AWARD school. This photo was taken at Vince's family home at Auburn in the lounge room. It was a classic Italian Australian loungeroom, ornate with religious icons and immaculate.
Vince was standing with his dad Guiseppe and put his arm around him. Guiseppe lent on Vince and let out a sigh and said "Ah Vince my son" as Vince kissed him.
It was a classic moment, the fourth frame of five shot in that sequence. It epitomizes all that is good about weddings: Love, Family and Friendship.
